this is an illustration i did for space class (art school fake math class requirement). the class was aweful but we did get to have a final project- to demonstrate space in some way- I chose to illustrate the djinn (i.e. what genies are based on) from islam (as a religion and the culural mythology surrounding).
They live in a dimension where they can see us and we can't see them but they can see us. they are incredibly powerful and persuasive, can take human or animal form, and are made of air and fire -- where as adam and eve were of earth and water. The djinn pre-existed adam and eve (they were created after angels... a sort of fallen angel-- mostly inclined to evil activity although they do have free will and can potentially become good and go to heaven). When Allah ordered the djinn to bow to Adam, they refused and therefore were cast from heaven... i think... I personally am not islamic-- the concept of the djinn was introduced to me by my roommates turkish american friend and i found it really fascinating. and the whole genie thing is sort a of a toned down westernized, children's version of the djinn. Anyway any time you think you see a ghost it's really a djinn warping your sense of reality. They are basically the answer for all weird supernatural activity... it's really interesting. Wikipedia it for sure.
and... I made this shortly after doing a presentation on Inka Essenhigh- i like her older work so much more than her new stuff, she did these amazing pieces with that sort of car paint enamal and now she's back with th oils. The car paint stuff is beautiful.
anyway- people in the class were like- this is similar to essenhigh- and i was happy but seeing as how the class didnt like essenhigh nearly as much as i do... i don't know if that was a good or bad thing.
oh and it's guoache and pencil and pen... on this really cool grey paper from the OThER art store! (not blick godammit!)
oh yeah...i kind of gave this to mo (turkish american guy) ... sort of wish i'd scanned it... the flash and shadow drive me a little nuts. oh well. i really wanted him to have it. it's kind of cathartic to give the art to the one from whose ideas it was inspired. and i hope to do more work like this. (and if he doesnt like it i hope he gives it to someone... i never signed or dated it either... oh well.) haha. maybe i should do a mythology series of this sort. that would be fun.
This piece is unbelievably fascinating!
First of all, the overall balance of the colors works well, I usually fail to create such unity as my color usage increases.
Secondly, the conceptual thought behind the painting is deep. You see I'm turkish as well and although I don't believe in religion, my folks are quite opposite. My mother would have mistaken the painting for anything "devil-like" There is a lot of superstition about djinn(s) for example, when people whine about covering up your mouth with a hand as you yawn, its not about politeness, it roots back to the belief that people assume djinn(s) would enter your body. So they say. Far more interesting than religion to be honest!
how cool! religion is really fascinating to me... like the effect it has on cultures and also the way that religion is changing as we become more globalized... and the whole sociology/ psychology behind it.
doing this piece really made me want to do more social commentary/religious/myth illustration type of stuff.
but the concept fo the djinn is interesting to me in so many ways- just the mythology of their creation and their purpose and the way 'jdinn' has been translated and retranslated in each location/culture to pose as different personfications- like the idea of the genie, etc. This definately happens in the spread of all cultures, relgions, practices.
the yawn thing is like of a christian belief that when you sneeze your soul can leave your body so you're vulnerable to being posessed by satan- so that's why people say "god bless you.".... i guess it's like a mini-exorcism just in case that does happen.
